FM 89.3 HIGHLIGHTS

Suzanne Bona Sunday, May 20 at 7am
Sunday Baroque
Hosted by Suzanne Bona

The number three has extensive symbolism, from philosophy and religion to mathematics and physics. There are three primary colors, three Patriarchs in Judaism; it’s the first odd prime number; and Shakespeare wrote about “three weird sisters,” to name just a few. There’s also wonderful music featuring three instruments, including some Baroque concertos, so three’s a charm this morning.

Giuseppe VerdiSunday, May 20 at 8pm
Pittsburgh Symphony
Hosted by Jim Cunningham

Manfred Honeck leads the orchestra, soloists, and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh in Giuseppe Verdi’s dramatic sacred masterpiece, his Requiem. The work is preceded by a performance of some early Italian sacred music by Chatham Baroque.

Carnegie Hall Live
Hosted by Fred Child and Jeff Spurgeon

Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Cleveland Orchestra in the Shostakovich Symphony #6 in b-minor, and the New York premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s Laterna magica. (Saariaho holds the Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall.) Plus, Yefim Bronfman is soloist in the Brahms Piano Concerto #2.
